The Herald Building started life in 1937. Built by Beaverbrook Newspapers to house the Glasgow edition of The Express, it shifted the focus of architecture and design from Art Nouveau into the modern era. It was extended in 1955, reflecting the continued growth of the Merchant City as Glasgow's premier business district. By 1980, when The Glasgow Herald took over the building, the Merchant City had begun its own transformation into a new centre for shopping and living in Glasgow; and by the late eighties, as the Glasgow Garden Festival and the 1999 City of Architecture and Design Award helped to create a new and design-conscious image of the city, the building was part of an area housing The Italian Centre and a prize selection of contemporary living space. Now part of one of Glasgow's most desirable working, shopping and living spaces, The Herald Building offers new opportunities to be part of Glasgow's future.
